He was born in Patara, one of the main cities of Lycia, in the southwest of Turkey, around 255 A.D. He even resurrected three children who had been torn to pieces by a murderer. Saint Nicholas is called the "worker of miracles". The iconography of Saint Nicholas as a praying man was established between the fourth and sixth centuries. It was only later that the image of the full-bodied saint with the Gospel book and in the act of blessing appeared. The oldest icon depicting the saint, preserved in the Monastery of St Catherine on Mount Sinai, dates from between the 7th and 8th centuries. Hagiographic icons appeared between the 12th and 13th centuries. The most important example is the icon from the second half of the 13th century (fig. 10) in the Pinacoteca Provinciale "Corrado Giaquinto" in Bari.
