...History of the icon
This is a magnificent icon of the Theotokos and the Child Jesus. According to the tradition of the Orthodox Church, the first iconographer was the Evangelist Luke. The first icon he painted under divine inspiration was of the Mother of God holding the Christ Child. Mary is shown wearing a veil, typical of Jewish women of that time, which is red. It is the color of divinity. There are also three stars on her veil, representing her eternal virginity. In this icon and many others, Mary looks directly at us, but with her hand, she directs us to the child she is holding. The faces of the child and the mother are turned toward each other. I like this icon very much, it is one of the first in my collection.
