He was born in the city of Kursk in 1754. His original name was Prokhor. At the age of 10, Prokhor became seriously ill. During his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep, who promised to heal him. When the boy saw the local icon of the Mother of God, he was healed. Young Prokhor loved reading the lives of the saints, going to church, and retreating to prayer. At the age of 19, he went to the monastery of Sarov to dedicate his whole soul to God. During his stay in the monastery, he fell seriously ill but was miraculously cured. He has ordained a deacon and a priest at the age of 34. After his ordination, Seraphim retired to the desert for 16 years. There he devoted himself entirely to Bible study, practice, and prayer. While practicing in the desert, he was attacked by robbers who seriously injured him. He was miraculously healed and returned to the monastery in 1810. On 2 January 1833, he was found dead in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary. He has officially declared a saint in 1903. The relics of St Seraphim of Sarov are kept in the Diveyevo Monastery in Russia. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on 2 January each year. There are many icons of St. Seraphim of Sarov. In this icon, you can see his name above the halo of the saint. To the left of the observer, there is the Virgin Mary, and to the right – a seraphim angel. The saint is kneeling on a rock and praying. St. Seraphim is known to have said: "My joy, acquire the spirit of peace, and around you, thousands will be saved". Similar words in the Church Slavonic language are written on the leaf that St. Seraphim is holding in his right hand as if he were offering it to God: "Passionate vagabond, savior of thousands around you". Technical details: • Icon painted in a Romanian Orthodox monastery by Nun Onufria; • Excellence quality hand-painted icon; • Natural pigments; • 24K gilded and varnished; • Icon painted on MDF Wood Board. The uniqueness of an icon: • Why can you see the rock? Assaulted by a storm of contrary thoughts (sent by the devil) St.Seraphim passed a thousand nights on a rock, continuing in prayer until God gave him complete victory over the enemy; • Saint's relics were lost during the Bolshevik persecution in Russia but were rediscovered in the basement of a museum in 1991; • Can you imagine, that in his cell he cultivated a garden and set up a beehive, and in the heat of summer he gathered moss from a swamp as fertilizer for his garden? This explains, why you can see some flowers in the image. Need further information? If you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to contact me, I'll be glad to answer them.
