Icon pendant "St. Irene, Great Martyr of Thessaloniki"

This miniature scapular is a great gift for someone who wishes to have a portable icon of their patron saint. Due to its small size, the icon pendant "St. Irene, Great Martyr of Thessaloniki" is inconspicuous ...and convenient to wear. It can easily be concealed under one's clothes, should one wish to do so.

The symbolism of the icon pendant "St. Irene, Great Martyr of Thessaloniki"

The small round icon depicts St. Irene, the first woman to become a great martyr. She is dressed in a tunic and himation and is wearing a tiara. Her left hand pressed to his chest. Her right hand is holding an eight-pointed cross as a symbol of Christian martyrdom. The reverse depicts a dove with an olive branch. Once, before the saint's conversion to Christianity, a dove flew into her room through the window carrying a small branch in its beak. The dove left the branch on the table and instantly flew away. Her teacher Apelian believed the branch to be a symbol of the young woman's virtues. On the other hand, the dove, in his opinion, stood for the grace received in Baptism. The image of the dove is surrounded by the text of a prayer in Church Slavonic.
