Symbolism and application of the item

The simple, laconic shape of the cross combines two symbols of God: the cross and the circle. The ...cross signifies Jesus Christ, God incarnates and crucified for the sins of people, and the circle - God existing in Heaven, beginningless and infinite. This shape is typical of ancient Novgorod crosses, such as the Alekseevsky victory cross of the 14th century from St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod and a veneration cross of the XIII-XIV centuries. from Borovichi, and echoes the simple form of crosses of the 12th century, where the cross was enclosed in a circle. Deesis  (In Greek δέησις - asking, praying for; deesis) - is an icon or a group of icons with Christ Almighty in the center with God's Mother and John the Baptist on His right. Also,
there can be images of the apostles,  saint fathers, martyrs, angels, and much more - that makes a multifigure deesis. The main dogmatic meaning of the Deesis composition is mediation prayer and intercession for the human race in the face of the Heavenly King and the Judge. On the above and below this cross you can see the archangels, Michael and Gabriel. The Deesis placed on the pectoral cross symbolizes the image of the prayer of the saints in Heaven for the person who wears this cross.

The centerpiece of the reverse side of the cross is occupied by the full-length image of the Holy Guardian Angel, with a cross and a sword in his hands. Such images are similar to the image of the Archangel Michael, from the 16th century. often found on the back of Russian breast crosses.

To the left of the Guardian Angel is depicted Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, and to the right is Saint Reverend Sergius of Radonezh. The composition is completed by the image of the Savior not made by hands, understood as the image of Christ the Priest, the head of the Church. Thus, the composition as a whole reveals the unity in Christ of the saints depicted on the reverse of the cross, which is the image of the Church of Christ. Wearing this cross the person is highly protected by the most venerated archangels and saints. In a circle on the cross are inscribed the words of the prayer: "May God rise again, and scatter Him, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence."
