...Symbolism and application of the item
This is a big men's cross. Its form reminds us of an anchor, as life is like a stormy sea and Heaven is like a peaceful harbor. To cross this sea you can only in a Church boat. The crucifix is depicted on the front side of the cross. On the left and right below, Christ is facing His Mother – the Most Holy Theotokos and the beloved disciple – the Apostle John the Theologian. Below, under the Crucifix, is the skull of Adam, who, according to legend, was buried on Mount Golgotha. Below is an icon of one of the miracles of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, "Nikola of the Sea", the patron saint of sailors and travelers – "The Miracle of the Three Shipmen".According to legend, merchants perishing in the stormy sea, robbed by shipbuilders, turned to St. Nicholas for help and were miraculously saved by him. At first, they were, like the prophet Jonah, swallowed by fish, then "spit out" by it on a stone that had risen from the depths of the sea, and then on a stone, like on a ship, they were delivered to the city. The ruler of the city, having learned about the villainy of the ship robbers, punished them and returned the goods to the merchants. The image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the iconography of St. Nicholas of Zaraisk is also placed on the reverse side of the cross. On both sides of St. Nicholas placed Russian saints, patrons of the fleet, and navigators of St. Mitrofan of Voronezh (1623-1703) and St. Arseniy Konevetsky († 1447). St. Mitrofan of Voronezh became famous as a wise pastor of the Voronezh diocese and an implacable fighter against the "enemies of the Holy Cross". Rev. Arseniy is known for his hermit life on the small island of Konevets in Lake Ladoga. At the bottom of the cross is placed the biblical miracle of "walking on water". The apostles were sailing on the sea at night and suddenly they saw Christ walking toward them on the water. Peter also wanted to walk in the water, but suddenly he got scared and began to drown. "And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" ( Mtt. 14,31-32) The cross is made as an image of spiritual protection in all life situations, troubles, and hardships traveling away from home. "Save and protect" – this short prayer of protection is on the reverse side of the cross.
