This round relief scapular with a movable hoop at the top contains a chest-length image of the Holy Empress Helena, Equal of the Apostles. She is wearing a royal set of jewelery and a tiara on her head and is holding the Lord’s Cross in her right hand. The final and most significant deed of her life was a trip to Palestine and the recovery of the Lord’s Precious and Life-giving Cross. St. Helena’s name is associated with the construction of numerous churches (according to different sources, there may have been from 3 to 28) in the Holy Land, especially the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and other churches in the towns of Bethlehem and Nazareth, the Garden of Gethsemane, and on Tabor, Zion and the Mount of Olives. St. Helena built many hospitals, distributed alms to the poor, freed prisoners and bought the freedom of those imprisoned for their debts. The reverse depicts a circle with the Cross of Calvary and the Instruments of the Passion, framed in the text of a paean to the Holy Cross.
