The front of this foldable icon pendant depicts a gate decorated with vines and crowned with the Holy Face not made by human hands, which is located on the topmost part of the icon. Upon opening the wings, one discovers that the icon is a triptych. The central part contains an icon of the Theotokos with the Savior Emmanuel in the womb, known as Panagia (Greek for “All-Holy”) in the Greek tradition and “The Sign” in the Russian one, enclosed in a circular medallion. This icon has been associated with numerous miracles (or signs) and has been historically connected to Novgorod. It has protected the city from enemy invasions and other calamities and is thought to be its patroness. The wings on the sides depict the Archangels as they pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and, beneath them, the glorified saints and protectors of the Church and the whole of Christendom – St. Nicholas the Miracle-Worker, Archishop of Myra in Lycia, and the Great Martyr St. George the Victorious. The reverse side contains the image of the blossoming Holy Cross, while the remaining free space is inscribed with the final words of the prayer to the Holy Cross.
